Anna Bolena
Anna Bolena by Gaetano Donizetti with libreto by Felice Romani.
Synopsis
Premiered in Milan in 1830, Anna Bolena together with Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux is the first opera of the so-called ‘Donizetti Three Queens’s cycle’. It was the first real success of the composer and the title role was sung by Giuditta Pasta, the celebrated singer for whom Bellini wrote Norma the following year. The libretto by Felice Romani closely follows the historical facts which convicted Anne Boleyn to death, queen of England and the second wife of Henry VIII.
The opera slipped into oblivion after decades, only to be resurrected by the Visconti legendary production for the La Scala in 1957.
After 32 years of being last heard in São Carlos, Anna Bolena returns also bringing with it the return of Gragam Vick with his 2007 production for Teatro di Verona.
