Lindane and Dalmiro by João Cordeiro da Silva
João Paulo Santos, conductor. Serio-comica Opera in 2 Acts. Libreto by Gaetano Martinelli.

Synopsis
João Cordeiro da Silva’s biographical data are scarce. However, we know that he was born in Elvas in 1735, and died in Lisboa, possibly in 1808. Contemporary of Souza Carvalho and Leal Moreira, he was by the end of the 18th. century organist and court composer. His work it is not unconnected from the fact that Niccoló Jommeli, after the 1755 Great Earthquake, accepted King José I ‘s invitation to write each year two operas for the Portuguese stages. Jommeli made a point of sending to Portugal Gaetano Martinelli who, together with Cordeiro da Silva, supervised the good musical quality and staged adaptation of those same operas. Martinelli, himself a librettist whose much of his work has yet to be discovered, settled in Portugal where he married and died. Yet, he employed his talent and modernity in many Portuguese opera libretti. Lindane and Dalmiro is one of them and the opera will have its modern premiere in this season. With the unusual designation of opera serio-comica, Lindane and Dalmiro was first performed at the Real Teatro da Ajuda in 1789, in the same year that George Washington was elected the first President of the United States, the Bastille was stormed by partisans and French people and our queen Maria I approved the construction of the Basílica da Estrela.
