____
Incipit – a Latin word that in music composition defines an initial sequence of notes – is a work commissioned by OPART to Luís Tinoco in order to celebrate the 450th anniversary of the foundation of Rio the Janeiro where the work was premiered in June 2015. Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concert in G major was written between 1929 and 1931 and its three movements are markedly influenced by jazz which Ravel heard during his tour of the United States in 1928. One of Béla Bartók’s best-known and accessible works is his Concerto for Orchestra composed in New York in 1943 and premiered the following year. As the title suggests, the various sections of the orchestra are treated as soloists.
